Kabbalah has been clouded and surrounded by misconception and false understanding. It was believed to uphold the ideals of witch crafting such as curses, spells and even the handiwork of miracles and wonders. However, all of these are complete opposite of what Kabbalah advocates. It has been kept from the entire humanity for two millennia until it was brought back to the world where it truly belongs.
Kabbalah is a school of thought that explains the bond that links God, the creator, to humanity and the universe in general. All the world’s forces descend from God and Kabbalah holds the wisdom on how these forces are structured and the laws that influences it.
Sephirot on the other hand, literally means in Hebrew as counting or enumerations. It comprises the ten attributes in Kabbalah teaching through which God, also called Ein Sof, reveals Him and all his creations. The etymology that surrounds the word Sephirot is very complex and these include sefer which means book; sippur or translated as telling story; sappir, the word for brilliance and sapphire; separ which implies boundary; and safra that connotes scribe.
Sephirot consists of the emanations of God through which He continuously sustains and preserves the very existence of universe and human race. According to the Lurianic Kabbalah, Sephirot corresponds to the stages of creation and the revelations of God’s will. It should not be viewed as the formation of ten different Gods but instead as the ten various ways in which God reveals himself through His emanations. This simply implies that God does not change, the changes comes in how we perceive God.
There are eleven sephirot identified but the reason it was decreased to ten is because daat and keter are the conscious and unconscious dimensions of one principle respectively. Thus making it as one attribute and resulting to formation of only ten emanations. The lists of sephirot are the keter, made as a representation of above conscious will; chochmah, considered as the supreme aptitude of thought; binah on the other hand is the comprehension of the aptitude; daat is made to represent the mental power of knowledge; chesed or also known as gedolah is made to represent prominence and compassion; gevurah is for righteousness, fear, and might; tiphereth is for clemency and sympathy; netzach is made to symbolize triumph and perpetuity; hod is for magnificence and grandeur; yesod is a depiction of foundation; and finally malkuth is made to embody kingdom and realm.
The ten attributes are complete representation of the ideology that Kabbalah embodies – sense of morality and virtue. All stages of creation are built around the ten sephirot as well as each of them plays a vital role in forming the reality of God and human existence.
